New National Health Insurance (NHI) certificates (Hokensho) will be issued effective November 1. The new certificate is supposed to be arriving to the NHI holders in mid-October. If it does not arrive by the end of October, please phone the National Health Insurance Division. This new NHI certificate is valid for one year. Please note the following (1) to (3) are in different categories among National Health Insurance. The insurance names and the expiration dates vary.
(1) NHI holders who will be 75 years old by Oct. 31, 2021:
Once you become 75 years old, your National Health Insurance category changes to the “Latter-stage Elderly Medical Care Insurance Certificate”. You will receive this new certificate toward the end of the preceding month of your birthday.
(2) Students who have “Maru Gaku Hihokenshasho” (a special NHI Certificate for Students):
Your “Maru Gaku Hihokenshasho” is valid until Mar. 31, 2021. If you need one after Apr. 1, 2021, please apply again.
※To apply for a new “Maru Gaku Hihokenshasho”, you need your previous “Maru Gaku Hihokenshasho”, your seal, and ID such as your student card that shows your status as a student from Apr. 1, 2021.
(4) Foreign citizens whose Resident Card (“Zairyu Card”) will expire by Oct. 31, 2021:
Your current NHI certificate is valid until the day after your Resident Card expires. If you extend your period of stay, you will receive a new NHI certificate.
