The Road Traffic Act has been revised and from Wed., April 1, traffic rules for cyclists aged 16 and older will become more strict. (Police officers may issue a “blue ticket” for violations.)
Under the new regulation, if a cyclist commits a (minor) traffic violation, they must pay a fine. If the fine is paid within the designated time period, there will be no court procedure. Currently, this system is widely used for car traffic violations. From April, it will also apply to bicycles.
There are more than 100 types of violations. Some major examples include:
– Using a mobile phone while riding: ¥12,000
– Ignoring a traffic signal: ¥6,000
– Two people riding on one bicycle (double riding): ¥3,000
※Serious violations such as drunk riding or dangerous obstructive riding will require a court process.
