When a disaster occurs due to a big earthquake or a typhoon, support (help) from other areas will not arrive for about 3 days. Electricity, water and gas may stop, and you may not be able to buy the goods you need for everyday life. In case that happens, make preparations now so that you can survive on at least 3 days.
◆Get into the following 3 habits to prepare for a disaster
(1) Keep the refrigerator/pantry full all the time. Buy extra food to stock at home, and eat the oldest food first. Restock as soon as you have eaten it.
a. Drinking water: 3 liters per person per day, for 3 days (9 liters in total). Stock enough for everyone in the family.
b. Foods: Have canned, bottled and retort-packed foods ready, which can be eaten as they are. Buy the foods you usually eat.
※If a blackout (electricity stoppage) occurs, the refrigerator can serve as food storage (a place to store food). Open and close the door as few times as possible, and it will help keep the air cooler inside and food can be stored for a longer period of time. If you have a lot of refrigerated items, move them to the freezer or store them in a cooler box. In the event of a blackout, you should eat the food in the refrigerator first, then the food in the freezer, and finally the preserved food. Think about the order of what you eat.
(2) Keep your bathtub full of water all the time. It can be used for flushing toilets and other domestic purposes. Water may be cut off (water services stop) at the same time as the power failure.
(3) Always have your car filled up with gas. After going out by car, fill it up with gas on your way home. A car is not only useful for going out, but also can be used for heating and cooling with an air conditioner. There are also cars that can charge smartphones or mobile phones.
