An emergency drill is to practice what to do in the event of a major earthquake and other disasters. Minoh City conducts a citywide, citizen-participating emergency drill every year on January 17. The forthcoming 2026 drill will be held on Saturday, and we encourage your entire family to participate. The drill starts at 10:00 with the announcement by “disaster prevention speakers” in your neighboring public space like parks.
◆Drills for People at Home
(1) Put up a “yellow handkerchief” in front of your house.
In Minoh City, “yellow handkerchiefs” are used as a sign of residents being safe. After looking after members of your own household after a disaster, please put up a “yellow handkerchief” in front of your house, e.g. at the entrance. (You may use any big eye-catching yellow cloth or towel.)
※How to check your household’s daily preparedness for a disaster? Please see the article “Get Started Now! Preparing for a Disaster”.
(2) Jichikai (resident association), your neighborhood community group will check for injuries and damages among your neighbors by yellow handkerchiefs or direct contact and will send their representative to the evacuation shelter to report the local situation.
◆Trial Walk to the Shelter Together with Your Family Members
Prior to January 17, get together with your family members to share the view on your evacuation shelter location and the escape route. On January 17, secure your evacuation by identifying hazards in and around the route, such as collapsible structures (block walls and other walls, etc.), possible falling /flying objects (billboards, potted plants, etc.), and the risk of the route in case of building collapse on a narrow passage, etc.
※Evacuation shelters are prepared in each of Minoh’s 14 elementary school districts, 12 of which use their local elementary schools as shelters and the remaining Kita and Kayano-kita elementary school districts designate the Maple Hall and Dai-ni (No.2) Junior High School as their evacuation shelters, respectively.
◆Drills and Exhibitions at Evacuation Shelters
Practical exercises, such as set-up of an evacuation shelter, running a soup kitchen to provide hot meals to disaster victims, etc. will be demonstrated in the drill at the evacuation shelter. Please join the activities conducted by the local Preparedness and Prevention Commission.
