An Emergency Earthquake Alert is a warning (notification) for “a strong earthquake is coming soon” before the strong shaking reaches you. The alert comes through TV, mobile phones and other devices with a warning sound, and it provides information about the expected intensity of the earthquake. However, the time between the alert and the strong shaking is very short — only a few seconds to tens of seconds! To protect your life, please remember to take the actions below, and when the alert sounds, make safety your top priority and act immediately.
◆Actions to Take Immediately
(1) If you are inside a building
a. Find a sturdy desk or table and hide under it. Hold onto the legs tightly and prepare for the strong shaking.
b. If there are no desks or tables nearby, protect your head with something like a pillow, bag or even a shopping basket. If nothing is available, cover your head with your coat or use your hands to protect your head. You can also move to a place where objects won’t fall or tip over.
(2) If you are outside
a. Move away from things like brick walls, vending machines or old buildings which can fall over.
b. Watch out for falling objects like shattered glass, signs or roof tiles. Protect your head with a bag or something similar and move to an open area away from danger.
◆Evacuation Centers Are Opened
Evacuation centers are opened when an earthquake occurs or there is a risk of landslides or flooding caused by typhoons or other natural disasters.
Evacuation centers are opened for each elementary school district when an earthquake with a seismic intensity of 5-low or higher occurs within the city, or when an evacuation advisory is issued due to wind and flood damage.
