Daycare Centers
Criteria
Daycare centers are intended for children aged from 57 days old until they enter school. When caregivers are unable to take care of their child for at least 4 hours a day, 4 days a week average (64 hours or more each month) (due to reasons such as work, school, sickness, or taking care of ill people during the daytime), they can be taken care of at daycare centers. Available daycare hours may change depending on your situation (approval of standard/short daycare time).
Childcare hours
Available daycare hours are based on the hours you are unable to take care of your child (due to work etc.) from Monday to Saturday between around 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Also, the first week or so of daycare may be run for shorter hours in order for your child to get used to it. (The open hours may be different depending on the center, so please check the list or map of Daycare Centers, Certified Child Centers and Kindergartens on the city website, or ask the Desk for Early Childhood.)
Closed on Sunday and public holidays (Holiday childcare is available at Sakura Daycare Center and Q’s Mall Keiai Nursery School. For details, please contact Sakura Daycare Center or Q’s Mall Keiai Nursery School).
Certified Child Centers that are used as kindergartens are also closed on Saturday.
Fees
Fees are assessed depending on the age of the child and the income of the caregivers. Daycare services are free for all children aged 3 – 5 (until they graduate from daycare), and for children aged 0 to 2 years old whose household has an exemption from municipal tax. However, you must still pay for school meal expenses.
If you use extended daycare hours, you will need to pay extra fees. The fee for extending hours is counted from 6:31 p.m. for standard daycare time. For short daycare time, the fee is counted from 6:01 p.m.
Applications
Please apply at the City Office. You need to provide documentation that shows that you are unable to take care of your child during the daytime, such as a certificate of employment issued by your employer, or a school certificate. In some cases, you also need to provide a certificate of the amount of municipal tax you paid. (e.g. Tax Certificate). Please apply by the 5th of the previous month of when you want your child to start. If there are no vacancies you may have to wait.
If you want your children to start daycare from January to March or April, the application period is different.
The conditions for enrollment written above apply to city authorized public and private daycare centers. There are also private daycare centers that are not authorized, and short use daycare centers as well.
